During development of the visual novel project "F", I challenged myself to create a fully functioning, finished, Gameboy game. I was no stranger to the GB Studio software or creating pixel art so what transpired were 4 weeks of steady development followed by its release.
The game design was inspired by something silly I did a lot as a kid; having owned a Gameboy Advance SP, I would place it on a table, bend the screen downwards and pretend I was using a laptop. Additionally, I populated the game with assets such as a photo album, diary entries and games to give the impression they were exploring someone else's computer. With design techniques acquired through developing visual novel project "F", this game also features out-of-the-box puzzle solving, an alternate reality game and player supported re-plays with unlockable content.
Following "M"s release on itch.io it rapidly grew among the ranks of the site's Gameboy projects, hitting a temporary high of 12th out of 6524 entries. On Newgrounds it placed 1st on the monthly leaderboards and the 10th most popular game of the year. It was also reposted to F95 forums and Reddit where it found substantial popularity and high praise for it's novelty and art.
